GATE Testing

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

The district provides a special program for students who are intellectually gifted. Children in grades 1 – 7 who perform extremely well on the district-administered Otis-Lennon School Ability Test and other standardized measurements may qualify for placement in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program for the following year.

If you think your child might qualify for this program and would like to have him/her assessed, GATE assessment consent forms may be completed on the Huntington Beach City School District website at www.hbcsd.us under Parents - Parent Portal, from October 23 - December 13, 2017 or by calling the GATE Office, (714) 964-8888, ext. 2036,  during these dates.

The last day to complete the GATE Assessment Consent form is December 13, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

Please note that district policy limits the number of times a student may be assessed. Students may be assessed a maximum of two times between first and seventh grade. Due to the limited opportunities to test for the GATE program, you might want to discuss with your child's teacher at your parent conference in December if this would be an appropriate time to have your child assessed.

Testing will take place from January 10 through February 7, 2018. Children who qualify for placement in the program will be placed in the fall of the next school year.
