District/School Programs

Hawes Elementary School has many programs that enrich learning for our students.

Common Core Standards:  All instruction is aligned to Common Core Standards.  To learn more about these standards, please click here.

Think Together in partnership with HBCSD is offering a free program for children 3-5 years old. 2 days of instruction/15 week sessions including parent and child.  For more information, please see the flier under Parents/School Fliers. ST Math:  All students in grades K-5 utilize the ST Math program, commonly referred to as JiJi.  Created by MIND Research Institute, ST Math is game-based instructional software for K-12 and is designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. ST Math incorporates the latest research in learning and the brain and promotes mastery-based learning and mathematical understanding. The ST Math software games use interactive, graphically-rich animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.  Each student has a unique password that remains the same throughout their time at Hawes.  It is our expectation that students complete 100% of the grade level syllabus by the end of the year.  In grades K-3, students also utilize the Fluency component of ST Math.

ST Music:  All of our students in grades K-5 participate in our ST Music keyboarding program.  Taught by Mr. Montgomery with the support of our classroom teacher, each class spends at least 30 minutes a week learning keyboarding (piano) using the ST Music program.

Vocal Music:  Each class spends 30 minutes each week with a credentialed music teacher in vocal music class.  Miss One teaches rhythm, songs, movement and more.  In 5th grade, our students learn to play the recorder - Recorder handout.

Physical Education:  Through a pilot program in our district, our students experience a credentialed PE teacher once a week for 30 minutes.  During this instruction time, our students are learning skills, playing games and developing their physical stamina.  At Hawes, we send only half of each class out to PE at one time so that our teachers have an opportunity to differentiate the needs of the students through small group instruction.

Library:  Each class has a weekly library time in the district funded library/media center.  Our librarian teaches library skills, digital citizenship and creates an environment in which our students to look forward to visiting this hub of learning.  During morning recess, our library is open for students to utilize the Makerspace stations, play with technology (coding) and play games.

Student Council:  Our students in grades 3-5 have the opportunity to participate in Student Council and to represent their class on this student advisory board.  This group, which is led by two of our teachers, lead us through several important assemblies, help promote character building in all and look for ways to make a difference across the campus.  Student Council leads The Great Kindness Challlenge, the Veteran's Day assembly and the Bravo Assembly.

Technology:  Technology is an integral part of life at Hawes.  Our students visit both our Mac Lab and our PC lab each week.  Additionally we have many Chromebook carts and iPad carts that are shared across the school.  Our students use Google Classroom and many other apps to create and present their learning.

Character Traits Program:  At Hawes, we focus on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success.  Our students learn about those traits through reading, discussions and the implementation of our school rules.

Accelerated Reader:  Through a joint partnership with our PTA, students in grades 1-5 utilize the Accelerated reader program to improve reading comprehension.  Students are challenged to meet a comprehension goal of 85% and to earn a specific amount of points that are determined for each student.  Students can access reading books through the AR room, a PTA sponsored library staffed with volunteers.  Parents can receive email messages that include a student's progress on  quizzes by signing up through

Accelerated Reader (AR) Renaissance Home Connect

HBCSD Preschool:  Our school district offers several preschool programs for students that are preschool age.  Although this program is not housed at Hawes, all can access the program through these links:  HBCSD State Preschool  and HBCSD Preschool Academy.

Learning Links:  Housed at Hawes twice weekly, this program is an interactive center for parents and children ages 0-5.  For more information, click here .  For registration information, please click here.  Please click here for updated calendar and direct email address.
